This Christmas favourite often features in school nativity plays during the holiday season, as it tells the tale of the Little Donkey plodding along on its way to Bethlehem, carrying Mary. Here it is arranged as a gentle calypso with a syncopated bass line.
Eric Boswell successfully combined dual careers as a composer and a lecturer in physics and electrical engineering. His early works were in a contemporary 20th Century 'classical' idiom, with works performed at London's prestigious Wigmore Hall. However, he got disenchanted with that music scene and, in 1959, decided to write a simple children's song. Little Donkey was the result. It immediately caught the attention of publishers, Chappell, who put him on contract to write popular songs.
