Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns
Arranged for String Quartet by Hugh Levey
Since Robert Burns wrote the words of Auld Lang Syne in 1788, it has become a standard feature of New Year celebrations, Burns nights, and the closing stages of almost every ceilidh dance and wedding in Burns’ native Scotland. It is written in a key which is suitable for community or solo singing. Full lyrics for all five verses are included with the programme notes. It can also be used as a short recital piece to close a concert.
It opens with 'bagpipe' drones which accompany a short introduction of the melodic material by violin 1. The violins then play the tune with drone accompaniment from viola and cello. The final verse is written in a rich 4 part harmony to provide a majestic ending for the popular work.
Duration: 1'48" without repeats for additional verses
