The ghoulish Addams Family made their debut in the classic 1960s television show of the same name. The show was a macabre comedy about the close-knit Addams family and their butler Lurch. It was a great hit, having many reruns and some sequels, a 2019 animated film, and the 2022 Netflix TV series about Wednesday Addams.
The enduring theme tune was written by self-taught composer and Hollywood veteran Vic Mizzy (1916-2009). Mizzy started writing songs in the 1930s, eventually moving into the world of television and film in 1959. The Addams Family Theme is really unusual because it features the harpsichord; an early keyboard instrument more commonly associated with the late Renaissance and Baroque period of music. Furthermore, it may be the only harpsichord music that has ever been accompanied by finger-clicks.
There is no harpsichord in this arrangement for Clarinet Quartet, but there are finger-clicks. It opens with The Addams Family theme in its standard form, then takes a detour into a jazzy style, before combining the two. At the end it gets quieter and quieter before ending on a truly scary discord!
